Mercedes 280SL Pagoda

Biarritz Sports & Classic Cars (BSCC) is delighted to present this Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda.

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963, the W113 series succeeded the 190 SL and 300 SL. Designed by Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, the new SL broke away from the sharp lines of its predecessors to adopt a pure, elegant, and modern style. Its concave hardtop—conceived to improve visibility and structural rigidity—quickly earned it the nickname “Pagoda,” a nod to the Asian architecture that inspired it.

As the ultimate evolution of the series, the 280 SL, introduced in 1967, represents the peak of the concept. Its 2,778 cc M130 inline-six engine delivers 170 SAE horsepower with generous torque, perfectly suited to the manual transmission. Renowned for its reliability, comfort, and build quality, it remains one of the most accomplished convertibles of the 1960s.

This example was delivered in 1969 by the Royal-Élysées importer and currently shows 74,800 km. It comes with its original service book, documenting maintenance within the Mercedes network until 1973. Since then, it has covered few miles but comes with a complete service history since 2001, totaling over €68,000 in maintenance and restoration work.

Between 2001 and 2020, the car was serviced by Erviti Bayonne.
From 2020 onward, it has been maintained by Bracq Héritage, the SL specialist managed by Paul Bracq’s son. Notable work includes the replacement of the injection pump (2021), a complete wiring harness renewal (2020), and the installation of a stainless-steel exhaust system. The hardtop was repainted in 2024.

This 280 SL is presented in immaculate condition and is ready to take to the road.

Smooth, precise, and well-balanced, the 280 SL’s chassis combines power steering, four disc brakes, and independent suspension on all four wheels—technical features that still make it remarkably easy to drive today, whether for leisurely touring or city use.
